PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on 14 different occasions.
Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.
The Champions League holders seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the showdown featuring the French league champions and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the scoring early on.
Yet, the southern French side struck two times late to seize a shock advantage. First, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.
In a breathtaking twist of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the dying seconds to send the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.
In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.
Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the last 13 years.
