The megacity Wakes Up to Dangerous Smog Post Celebrations
Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" level.
Alarming Air Quality Measurements
Several parts of the city recorded an pollution measurement over 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe limit recommended by the global health authority.
In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of eighteen hundred, representing fifteen to twenty times above acceptable levels.
Firecracker Restrictions and Current Changes
Since 2020, the government had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that engulfs the capital as the cold season begins.
However in recent months, the current city leadership petitioned the judicial authority to propose a easing of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and public health".
Court Decision and Enforcement
Despite concerns of environmental and health campaigners, the court complied with the request, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during limited hours throughout the Diwali.
On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the city, with little regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed pollution spiking around the night hours to the most severe levels recorded during celebrations in at least three years.
Regional Consequences
Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also initiated a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to declining air quality in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the festivities.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
The dangerously high levels of pollution in Delhi have remained as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.
Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous airborne contaminants in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the worst readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
Multiple Contamination Contributors
The situation in the city is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating toxic haze that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air sets in.
Health and Economic Consequences
The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million people calling home the capital region is enormous, according to multiple research.
The contaminated air results in elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
Air quality crisis is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k early deaths annually in Delhi.
